Carnegie Mellon University (Carnegie Mellon or CMU) is a private, highly selective research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The university began as the Carnegie Technical Schools, founded by the American well-known industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1900. In 1912, the school became Carnegie Institute of Technology and began granting four-year degrees. In 1967, the Carnegie Institute of Technology merged with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research (founded in 1913 by Andrew W. Mellon) to form Carnegie Mellon University. Carnegie Mellon is the university that spans the arts to technology, creating innovation with impact. It comprises schools of technology, science, computer science, humanities and social sciences, fine arts, public policy, and industrial administration. The school has the first computer science institute, the top in the United States. Carnegie Mellon is home to one of the first departments of computer science in the US. Carnegie Mellon University strives to be different from other top-tier research schools by focusing its research on ways to improve the world and the everyday lives of people. Since its inception, Carnegie Mellon has grown into a world-renowned institution, with numerous programs that are frequently ranked among the best in the world.
